DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) Vaccine This sheet will help you understand the three diseases, the vaccine, and the risks of both the vaccine and the illnesses. Why get vaccinated? DTaP vaccine can prevent diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis illnesses. Most people who receive the DTaP vaccine are protected from infection with these illnesses for many years. What are diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis? Diphtheria (D) is spread from person to person and can make it hard for you to breathe and cause heart failure, paralysis, or death. Tetanus (T) enters the body through cuts or wounds and causes your muscles to stiffen. It can also make it difficult for you to swallow, breathe, or open your mouth. It can lead to death. Pertussis (aP) is spread from person to person and is also known as 'whooping cough.

Hepatitis A Vaccine This sheet will help you understand the disease, the vaccine, and the risks of both. Why get vaccinated? Hepatitis A vaccine can prevent hepatitis A. Most people who receive the hepatitis A vaccine are protected from hepatitis A infection for many years. What is hepatitis A? Hepatitis A is a disease that affects the liver. If you get hepatitis A, you can feel sick for several weeks but you will usually get better without any lasting liver damage. It is rare, but people older than 50 years and people with other liver diseases are at risk for liver failure and death if they get hepatitis A. Many children less than 6 years oid do not have symptoms if they get hepatitis A. In adults with Hepatitis A, symptoms include: Feeling tired Not feeling hungry Stomach pain Nausea Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) Dark urine Light-colored poop How do you get hepatitis A? You can get hepatitis A through direct contact with someone who has hepatitis A. You can also get it by eating or drinking something that has tiny amounts of poop in it from a person who has hepatitis A. Who should get the hepatitis A vaccine? Children should get 2 doses of hepatitis A vaccine: 0 First dose between 12 and 23 months of age 0 Second dose: at least 6 months after the first dose Adolescents not already vaccinated should also get the vaccine. Babies 6 to 11 months old who are traveling outside of the United States should get 1 dose of the hepatitis A vaccine and then get a second dose at the ages recommended above. If you come into direct contact with someone with hepatitis A and HAVE NOT been vaccinated, get the vaccine as soon as possible within 2 weeks after exposure. What are the risks of the hepatitis A vaccine? After a hepatitis A vaccination, it is common to have: • Soreness or swelling where you got the shot Headache Feeling tired Not feeling hungry as often These things almost always stop within a few days. It is very rare to have: Fainting Dizziness Vision changes Ringing in your ears An allergic reaction (hives, swelling of the face, difficulty breathing, fast heartbeat) What if there is a problem? Hepatitis B Vaccine This sheet will help you understand the disease, the vaccine, and the risks of both. Why get vaccinated? Hepatitis B vaccine can prevent hepatitis B. Most people wha receive the hepatitis B vaccine are protected from hepatitis B infection for life. What is hepatitis B? Hepatitis B is a disease that affects the liver. It can last a few weeks or it can lead to a lifelong illness. The disease does not always have symptoms, so many people who have hepatitis B do not know they have it. The virus can stay in your body and can cause serious health problems over time. These problems can include liver damage, liver cancer, and death. How do you get hepatitis B? You can get hepatitis B from direct contact with the blood, semen, or other body fluids of someone who has hepatitis B. A mother with hepatitis B can give it to her baby during birth. Even sharing items such as razors or toothbrushes with someone who has hepatitis B can cause infection. Who should get the hepatitis B vaccine? All babies should get their first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine at birth. Vaccination at birth will protect your child from hepatitis B throughout their life. They should then get a second dose at 1—2 months and a third dose after 6 months. Anyone who did not get a hepatitis B vaccine as a baby should get vaccinated. They will get 2 or 3 doses depending on the brand of vaccine. What are the risks of the hepatitis B vaccine? After a hepatitis b vaccination, it is common to have: • Soreness or swelling where you got the shot Headache Feeling tired These things almost always stop within a few days. HPV (human papillomavirus) Vaccine This sheet will help you understand the disease, the vaccine, and the risks of both. Why get vaccinated? The HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine can prevent infection from same types of HPV, and it can prevent over 90% of cancers caused by HPV. What is HPV (human papillomavirus)? HPV is spread through skin-to-skin or sexual contact with someone who has HPV. Most HPV infections go away on their own within 2 years. Sometimes, HPV infections will last longer and can cause cancers later in life. HPV can cause warts on the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, and anal region. HPV infection can also cause certain types of cancers, including: Cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers Penile cancer Anal cancers Cancers in the mouth, including the tonsils, the base of the tongue, and the back of the throat. Who should get the HPV vaccine? Everyone younger than age 27 should get the HPV vaccine. • Youth should get their first vaccination between the ages of 9 and 12 to protect themselves before possible exposure to the virus. Influenza (Flu) Vaccine (Inactivated) This sheet will help you understand the disease, the vaccine, and the risks of both. Why get vaccinated? A yearly influenza (flu) vaccine helps protect you and your family from getting the flu. If you get the flu, you will miss work, school, and social gatherings. You cannot get the flu from the flu vaccine. What is influenza (flu)? Influenza (flu) is a viral illness that spreads from person to person. Anyone can get the flu at any time. The coughs and sneezes from a nearby person with the flu could be all it takes to make you sick. You are at greater risk for complications if you are a baby, a young child, over 65 years old, pregnant, or have other health conditions such as asthma, heart disease, cancer, or diabetes. Symptoms of flu include: Fever or headache Sore throat Muscle aches and chills Cough Runny or stuffy nose Who should get the the flu vaccine? Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every flu season (October to May). It takes about 2 weeks for your body to develop protection after getting vaccinated. What are the risks of the flu vaccine? After a flu vaccine, it is common to have: • Soreness or swelling where you got the shot Fever or headache Muscle aches These things almost always stop within a few days. Meningococcal ACWY Vaccine This sheet will help you understand the disease, the vaccine, and the risks of both. Why get vaccinated? Getting the meningococcal vaccine helps protect you from meningococcal disease, which can cause meningitis, an infection of the brain and spinal cord. What is meningococcal disease? Meningococcal disease can cause problems with the brain and spinal cord. It is a severe disease with a high risk of death or permanent disability. Who should get the meningococcal vaccine? Older children should receive 2 doses at about these ages: 1 1—12 years 16 years What are the risks of the meningococcal vaccine? MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) Vaccine This sheet will help you understand the three diseases, the vaccine, and the risks of both the vaccine and the illnesses. Why get vaccinated? MMR vaccine helps protect you from measles, mumps, and rubella illnesses. Most people who receive the vaccine will be protected for life. What are measles, mumps, and rubella? Measles (M) gives you a fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. After that, you might get a rash all over your body. It can cause seizures, ear infections, diarrhea, or pneumonia. Sometimes, it can even damage your brain or cause death. Mumps (M) gives you a fever, headache, muscle aches, and makes you tired. The glands under your ears might get big and hurt. It can make you deaf or cause other problems like swelling in your brain or spinal cord, or in your testicles or ovaries. Rarely, it can cause death. Rubella (R) gives you a fever, sore throat, rash, headache, and irritated eyes. It can cause pain in the hands and joints of many women. If someone gets rubella while pregnant, they might have a miscarriage, or the baby could have serious problems. Who should get the MMR vaccine? Children should get 2 doses of the MMR vaccine at about these ages: 12—15 months years Babies 6—1 1 months should get a dose before traveling if they are going outside the United States. Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine This sheet will help you understand the disease, the vaccine, and the risks of both. Why get vaccinated? Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine can keep you from getting sick with pneumococcal disease. What is pneumococcal disease? Pneumococcal (new-mü-kaw-coal) disease is an illness caused by bacteria. These bacteria are the most common cause of pneumonia, a lung infection. Who should get the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine? Children should receive 4 doses at about these ages: 2 months 4 months • 6 months 12—15 months Older kids should also receive the vaccine if they didn't get it when they were younger. People over 65, and people 19 to 64 who have health problems, should also receive the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. What are the risks of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine? After receiving the pneumococcal vaccine, it is common to have: Redness, swelling or pain where you got the shot Fever, chills and headache Muscle aches and joint pain Loss of appetite Tiredness It is very rare to have: Dizziness or fainting Vision changes Ringing in your ears An allergic reaction (hives, swelling of the face, difficulty breathing, fast heartbeat) What if there is a problem? Polio Vaccine This sheet will help you understand the disease, the vaccine, and the risks of both. Why get vaccinated? Polio vaccine can prevent polio illness. Most people who receive the polio vaccine are protected from infection for life. What is polio? Polio is a virus that infects your spinal cord and can cause you to be paralyzed (to no be able to move your body). Polio is rare in the U.S. but it still exists in other countries. Symptoms of polio include: • Sore throat Tiredness Nausea Headache Stomach pain Who should get the polio vaccine? Children under the age of 6 should receive 4 doses at about these ages: 2 months 4 months 6—18 months years Healthcare workers and adults traveling to certain countries may need a dose of polio vaccine even if they received the vaccine as a child. Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccine This sheet will help you understand the disease, the vaccine, and the risks of both. Why get vaccinated? The Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine helps protect you and your family from getting chickenpox. If you get chickenpox, you will miss work, school, and social gatherings. What is varicella (chickenpox)? Varicella, also known as chickenpox, is a highly contagious viral infection. It causes an itchy rash with red spots that turn into fluid-filled blisters and then scab over. Chickenpox spreads through coughing and sneezing or from touching the sores/blisters of someone with chickenpox. Other symptoms of chickenpox include: Not feeling hungry Feeling tired Headache Who should get the varicella vaccine? Children should get 2 doses of chickenpox vaccine at about these ages: 12—15 months years Anyone who has never had chickenpox and is over 13 years old should get 2 doses of varicella vaccine given at least 3 months apart. What are the risks of the Varicella vaccine? If you are getting the varice\la vaccine, tell your provider if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system. Zoster (Shingles) Vaccine This sheet will help you understand the disease, the vaccine, and the risks of both. Why get vaccinated? Zoster (shingles) vaccine can prevent you from getting shingles. What is zoster (shingles)? Shingles is a painful skin rash, usually with blisters. Other symptoms of shingles include: Fever Headache Chills Upset stomach How do you get shingles? Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you recover from chickenpox, the virus stays in your body and can cause shingles later in life. The risk of shingles increases as you get older. Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another, but it can cause chickenpox in someone who has never had chickenpox or has never received the chickenpox vaccine. Who should get the zoster (shingles) vaccine?
