Disposal of common household amounts is free for people who live in Salt Lake County.

Please make an appointment for large quantities, drums, or business waste.

Please bring someone to assist you with larger items, as unloading assistance is not available.

We cannot accept explosives or radioactive materials.

Delivery Instructions for HHW

  • Sort your household hazardous waste by type and separate it from common garbage (do not bring garbage).
  • Transport in a sturdy container.
  • Do not transport waste in plastic bags; it creates a hazard for our employees.
  • Make sure containers are upright and secure.
  • Do not bring collected waste from “community events.”
  • Be prepared to offload waste from your own vehicle to one of our carts.
  • If you have lab grade chemicals or items such as organic peroxide, mercury, picric acid, hydrofluoric acid, contact the Household Hazardous Waste Program in advance at 385-468-3862.

Materials Accepted

The following locations accept antifreeze, car batteries, and oil. They cannot accept tires.

Many auto-related businesses throughout the county also accept used oil (but only oil—no antifreeze or batteris), including hydraulic/engine oil, brake fluid, transmission oil, transformer oil, and synthetic motor oil. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality maintains a list of Salt Lake County used oil collection sites.

Used Oil Collection Sites in Salt Lake County

Common Household Batteries

Alkaline batteries (such as common AA, AAA, C, and D batteries) are generally not hazardous and can be disposed of in your trash can if you follow these precautions:

  1. Gather used alkaline batteries in a cardboard box or plastic container to prevent sparks.
  2. Tape 9-volt terminals to prevent fire risk.

Other Batteries

Nonalkaline batteries (lithium, NiMH, NiCd, etc.) and vehicle batteries (and similar) should be disposed of responsibly via the options below.

Household Hazardous Waste Facility

We accept electronic waste from Salt Lake County residents only. We cannot accept business waste or waste from people who live outside Salt Lake County.

Be sure that you have securely deleted (wiped) any electronics capable of storing information (hard drives, etc.). We are not responsible for data on any devices brought for disposal.

Please bring someone to assist you with larger items as we cannot guarantee staff will be available to assist with unloading.

While mattresses are not considered hazardous waste, recycling is the environmentally friendly way to get rid of a mattress (and/or box springs) that you no longer need. There is one mattress recycler in Salt Lake County that will responsibly dispose of your old mattress (for a small fee) and keep the waste out of our landfill.

Mattresses and box springs must be dry and free of bed bugs.

Pick-up service at your location is also available for an additional charge.

For a nominal fee, most tire dealers will accept your old tires when you purchase new ones. If you have additional tires to dispose of, there is one tire recycler in Salt Lake County that will accept waste tires (again, for a small fee):

Please note that storing or transporting waste tires requires a health department permit.

Residents (not businesses) may also pay to dispose of tires at the two Salt Lake County landfills.
