Charges Declined for Utah Highway Patrol 2-26-26 OICI

After conducting an officer involved critical incident review, the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office has declined to file criminal charges for the February 26, 2026, use of deadly force by a Utah Highway Patrol Sergeant against Tyler Traveon Mhaka.  Mr. Mhaka’s criminal case continues to work its way through the system. We have attached a letter that endeavors to protect Mr. Mhaka’s rights while outlining our findings and conclusions.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office, operating pursuant to an agreement with participating law enforcement agencies and consistent with established protocols and applicable laws, conducts independent reviews of officer involved critical incidents, including police officers' use of deadly force used in the scope of police officers' official duties.
