Unveiling of Salt Lake County Athletic Fields Inaugural Exhibition Games with Local Teams

Murray, UT - Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation is thrilled to announce the completion of the Salt Lake County Athletic Fields renovation project. To celebrate the newly renovated field space, an exciting exhibition game is scheduled on October 17, featuring the Wasatch Soccer Club, Murray Soccer Club, and a youth rugby team.

DATE: Thursday, October 17, 2024

TIME: 3 pm-4:30 pm

PLACE: Salt Lake County Athletic Fields (adjacent to the Salt Lake County Ice Center in Murray, 5201 S Murray Park Lane)

WHO: Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, Salt Lake County Councilwoman Aimee Winder Newton, Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Division Director Chris Otto, Athletic Fields Manager Ryan Taylor

Thanks to the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and Transformational Initiative (TI) funding, the upgrade involved transforming three grass fields, two multi-use fields, and a rugby field into high-performance synthetic turf.

This enhancement conserves water and dramatically improves field access and playability, allowing for more programs and longer seasons. The areas surrounding the fields have also been redesigned utilizing localscape design that features water-wise plants, contributing to a more sustainable environment.

"With these professional-grade artificial turf fields in place, Salt Lake County is saving about 50,000 gallons of water per day, which translates to an annual savings of approximately seven million gallons. This is one of several County projects focused on responsible water use. These projects contribute to our ongoing efforts to preserve the Great Salt Lake," says Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson.

"Thanks to the vital funding from ARPA and the exceptional work of our design and construction partners, these fields are now ready to provide incredible opportunities for sport and recreation," adds Chris Otto, Division Director of Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation. "From morning until night, community members will have access to top-quality fields for play and activities. We're excited to see how these spaces will enhance the recreational experience for everyone who uses them."

"Having fields that can be played on year-round will give kids more opportunities to exercise, enjoy the fresh air, and spend time with family and friends," said Salt Lake County Councilwoman Aimee Winder Newton. "We want all our residents to have great mental and physical health."

The October 17 event will showcase the versatility and quality of the new fields, highlighting the year-round opportunities they will offer to our community.
