Robo-Traps for Community Cats

About this project

A cat with green eyes.
  • Status: In Progress
  • Lead Agency: Animal Services
  • Funding Amount: $50,000

The Robo Traps for Community Cats project will use specialized trapping systems equipped with game cameras and remote monitoring technology to improve how Salt Lake County manages community cat populations. Using a method called Total Targeted Trapping, Animal Services staff can track how many cats visit a site in real time before activating the trap, helping ensure the entire colony is captured efficiently. The remote viewing system allows staff to monitor traps from a distance and decide when to close them, reducing the need for repeated site visits and saving time. This approach will lower costs by preventing colony growth, improve field decision making, and allow multiple locations to be managed at once, ultimately reducing wait times for residents seeking assistance with community cat concerns.
