Buk Mawut Buk Sentenced for Murder of Aaron Lowe

Today, a Third District Court sentenced Buk Mawut Buk to 18 years to life for the murder of Aaron Lowe and attempted murder of another individual at a gathering in Salt Lake County.

On September 26, 2021, the defendant and victims were at a party near 2200 South Broadmoor Street in Salt Lake County. At one point, an argument began with Mr. Lowe and some other people at the party. During that confrontation, the defendant walked over and shot Mr. Lowe and another individual.  As both victims were lying injured on the ground, the defendant continued to shoot them. Mr. Lowe died on the scene; the other individual was taken to the hospital and had to undergo surgery for multiple injuries. Following the shooting, the defendant fled the scene; he was arrested in Draper on October 3, 2021.

During the sentencing, Mr. Lowe’s father and mother spoke. Mr. Lowe’s father spoke of Aaron’s loved ones walking with a limp in their souls since his death but said that he forgave the defendant the night of the shooting. Mr. Lowe’s mother talked about the defendant leaving a hole in her heart that wouldn’t be filled even if she had ten more children.

The court sentenced the defendant to 15 years to life for one count of first-degree felony murder and three years to life for one count of first-degree felony attempted murder. The sentences are to be served consecutively.

“The senseless violence that took Mr. Lowe’s life left his teammates, classmates, friends, and family in shock. We hope today’s sentence will help the healing process start for not only Aaron Lowe’s family and loved ones, but for the entire Salt Lake County community,” said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill. “We thank our prosecutors who worked for more than two years on this case. We appreciate the diligent work of the Salt Lake City Police Department in conducting a thorough investigation.”
