25 Charges Filed Against Ramon Rojas-Huerta

Today, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill announced 25 charges filed against Ramon Rojas-Huerta, 44, including five counts of second-degree felony assault on a peace officer with a dangerous weapon.

On June 29, 2025, Salt Lake City Police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 1660 West North Temple. When they arrived a tow truck driver told them that he has an agreement with Burger King on North Temple to tow any vehicles sitting in the parking lot longer than ten minutes after 9 pm due to high drug activity. The tow truck driver said he saw what he believed to be a drug deal occur between the defendant and a female. The tow truck driver told police while he had the defendant's van on his truck, the defendant came over and was acting erratically, so the tow truck driver tried to calm him down. Eventually, the defendant paid the tow truck driver $160 to drop his van from the truck, even though the tow truck driver told him he only needed to pay $100. As the tow truck driver was preparing a receipt for the defendant, the van started backing up quickly and struck the rear end of the tow truck. The defendant then allegedly drove away and began firing a weapon at the tow truck driver. The tow truck driver then saw the defendant drive away West on North Temple until they reached Bangerter Highway, where he entered the highway. The tow truck driver reported that the defendant’s vehicle went West onto California Avenue, while the tow truck driver went to the Chevron gas station at 4025 W 1820 S. The tow truck driver told police that while he was filling up his tire at the gas station, the defendant drove by and shot at him twice. The tow truck driver attempted to follow the defendant but stopped when he saw police arriving. As police pursued the suspect North on Bangerter Highway, where gunfire was allegedly initiated by the defendant in the area of California Avenue. The suspect then drove away, traveling eastbound on I-80. Law Enforcement Officers attempted a PIT maneuver multiple times. The suspect eventually came to a stop when one officer rammed their patrol vehicle into the back of the white van, and five officers discharged their weapons from their patrol vehicles. Two Salt Lake Police vehicles were struck by gunfire during the pursuit. Seven shell cases were recovered on Bangerter Highway.

The owner of the vehicle the defendant was driving told police that he did not have permission to drive it when he was driving.

When police interviewed the defendant, he told them that he had gone to Burger King to get food, and while there, the tow truck driver hooked up his van to his truck and then threatened to blow his head off if he didn't pay him $180. The defendant stated that he had paid the tow truck driver, and after the tow truck driver dropped off his van, the defendant drove away. The defendant told police that the tow truck driver then started following him. The defendant said that he fired a couple of rounds from his gun toward the tow truck driver to show that he had a gun and could defend himself. The defendant then told police that he was driving around and noticed the tow truck driver following him, and he was trying to get away. The defendant told police that he was out of gas, but he saw the tow truck driver at the Chevron, so he continued driving. The defendant stated that he noticed the tow truck driver had started to follow him again, and then he saw police cars behind the tow truck, also following him. The defendant referred to
the Police as Cartel Police or Federal and said that they weren't real police but friends of the tow
truck driver. The defendant also explained he fired several gunshots in the air toward the Police
vehicles to show them he could defend himself and get the police to back off. The defendant said he
realized they were real police, when he observed a Utah Highway Patrol vehicle.

“The prevalence of gun violence in our community is unacceptable.  Our community deserves to be safe when they go out to eat, or are simply driving on our roads, ” said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill. “We appreciate the work of the detectives that thoroughly investigated this case which led to these charges being filed. All persons accused of wrongdoing are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law."
