SALT LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE CONFIRMS IDENTIFICATION OF REMAINS RECOVERED IN STARVATION

Salt Lake County — The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office has received confirmation from a private lab and the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner that human remains recovered from a submerged vehicle in Starvation Reservoir on September 30, 2024, have been identified as Steven Willard Anderson.

Anderson was reported to be missing in June 2004, and his case has remained an open and ongoing investigation for several years. On September 29, 2024, a submerged vehicle located in Starvation Reservoir, confirmed to be connected to Anderson’s case.

A collaborative recovery effort on September 30, 2024, led to the successful extraction of both the vehicle and the remains found inside. Following DNA testing from a private lab, an examination at the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner has determined no foul play is suspected. As a result, Anderson’s case will be officially closed.
The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to Anderson’s family and thanks all agencies involved in the recovery process for their dedication and professionalism.
