Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Arrests Two Suspects in Fatal Shooting at Mt. Olympus Trailhead

South Salt Lake, Aug. 12, 2024 — The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office has successfully apprehended two individuals in connection with the fatal shooting on Aug. 3 that claimed the life of a young man.

Search warrants were executed at two residences earlier today, leading to the arrests of a 15-year-old male and 20-year-old Mateo Martinez, both of whom are documented gang members. The suspects are facing homicide charges.

At approximately 4:30 AM on Saturday, Aug. 3, deputies responded to reports of gunfire at the Mt. Olympus trailhead in unincorporated Salt Lake County. Upon arrival, they found 18-year-old Naod Welday suffering from multiple fatal gunshot wounds. He was accompanied by two friends at the time, one of whom was also assaulted by the suspects. Importantly, none of the victims were associated with or suspected of gang activity.

Sheriff Rosie Rivera commented, "This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gang violence. We are committed to ensuring that those responsible for this senseless act are brought to justice. I want to commend the dedicated efforts of our deputies and detectives for their tireless work in leading to these arrests."

The investigation remains active, and the Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with additional information to come forward by calling 801-840-4000.

"Our top priority is the safety of our residents," Sheriff Rivera added. "The Sheriff’s Office, including the Metro Gang Unit, will continue to work tirelessly to combat gang violence and protect our community."
