Upper Mill Creek Road Improvement Project Construction Update
Construction Cleanup and Pause to Welcome Back Winter Recreation!
We're excited to announce that the Upper Millcreek Canyon Road will reopen for non-motorized winter recreation from December 15, 2025, through March 15, 2026. All winter recreation beyond the gate will operate as it has in previous winters, with a couple of minor changes. Our goal is to provide visitors with the familiar seasonal experience they expect.
Changes to Winter Recreation in Upper Mill Creek Canyon
Temporary Winter Gate Location
This winter, the seasonal "winter gate" historically at Maple Grove has been moved slightly down the canyon near the Terraces Boardwalk, as has its parking. This is the same location used during summer construction.
Parking is available at this temporary gate, and winter recreation will continue beyond it as usual.
Snow Conditions and Early-Season Expectations
Project partners put significant effort into safely shutting down construction and preparing the area for public use because we know how important winter access is to the community.
To safely complete the final construction tasks and allow crews to remove equipment, the roadway beyond the gate was plowed. As a result, visitors may encounter lighter or drier conditions until snowfall rebuilds the snowpack.
Be prepared for potential final cleanup activities by crews as they leave the area on or around the 15th.
The yurt is closed for the 2025-26 season.
Season Duration
The road will remain open for winter recreation until March 15, when construction will resume for the final phase of the Upper Mill Creek Canyon Road Improvement Project. When construction resumes March 15, 2026, access to the canyon road will be prohibited. Access to upper Millcreek will be allowed on trails (Pipeline, Upper Pipeline, Terraces)
Completing the remaining work before winter of 2026 should ensure a fully open, uninterrupted winter recreation season in 2026-2027.
