Get Involved in the Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Utah has experienced historically low unemployment and strong economic growth, which created increased demand for skilled workers in certain industries. In response, Salt Lake County Economic Development supported workforce development efforts focused on identifying and training under-employed candidates.

The construction industry has long been a cornerstone of infrastructure expansion and economic development in Salt Lake County. To help meet workforce needs not fully addressed by other providers, Salt Lake County Economic Development partnered on a pre-apprenticeship program designed to prepare participants for careers in the skilled trades.

Pre-Apprenticeship Training

Utah Women in Trades ran a 120-hour pre-apprenticeship program in partnership with Salt Lake County and the Utah Building Trades Council. The program helped adults build foundational math, language, and hands-on skills for careers in the various construction trades.

Participant Testimonial

"When I started my Pre-Apprenticeship, I was shy and uncertain, especially being separated from my kids. My main goals were simple: to get them back and secure a spot in the trades.

Welding has been transformative. It's a form of meditation, where I feel calm and focused like never before. I've also found strength in the sisterhood of women from all walks of life, supporting each other.

The Utah Women in Trades program has been a guiding force, helping me build a future not just for my kids, but for myself. It's about showing them that their mom can be happy and successful."
