Animal Services

Animal Services FAQs

Salt Lake County Animal Services serves the residents and pets of Unincorporated Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City, Herriman, Holladay,Riverton, and Midvale.

Legally, all pets are required to be licensed in the city in which they live. Licensing your pet is also one of the quickest ways to get your pet back to you if it gets lost.

Each city differs in its pet ordinances regarding how many dogs and cats you can legally own. In some cities it is unlimited as long as they are all licensed and cared for. In other cities, there is a set number. Please refer to your city's animal ordinances for exact limits.

If you can contain the cat in a box or carrier, please bring it in to the shelter during open business hours or call (801) 745-7043 (officer dispatch) for an animal control officer to pick up. If the cat is feral, please call (385) GOT-PETS to arrange for our TNR coordinator to come trap the cat.

In order for the animal's owner to have the best chance of finding their pet, it should be taken to the appropriate shelter.

The appropriate shelter is based on where the animal was found. It is also a violation of animal control ordinances to harbor a stray for more than 24 hours.

If you pick up a stray in our jurisdiction, you can bring it in to the shelter during open business hours. If it is outside of business hours or you cannot contain the stray pet, you can call our animal control dispatch 24/7 at (801) 743-7045.

Call the Utah Division of Wildlife Services at (801) 538-4700 or Federal Wildlife Protection at (801) 975-3307.

Visit the shelter within 24 hours and then every other day. Visit our wLost Pets page for more information or to see animals in the shelter online. We also encourage you to hang flyers in your neighborhood and post pictures on social media. Most importantly, never give up hope that you will find your lost pet.

Visit the shelter. We have many to choose from. Or, visit the Animal Services' website and Facebook page to see adoptable animals.

If you live in a jurisdiction city (Unincorporated Salt Lake, Salt Lake City, Herriman, Holladay, Midvale, or Riverton), call (801) 743-7045 to reach animal control dispatch directly. Our animal control officers work 24/7.

Some snow will come off the blade onto driveways. Our primary duty is to open and keep open the main roadway system.

It is illegal to leave a car parked on the street November through April, as stipulated by Salt Lake County Ordinance 11.20.130.

Having to swerve a snow plow in and out between parked vehicles is not only dangerous, but also nerve wracking for our drivers. We can not do an efficient job with parked vehicles on the street.

Additionally, vehicles parked on the road could be plowed in with a snow bank or damaged by the snow plow. Typically the street will not be plowed if cars are parked on it.

Main roads are expected to be cleared within eight hours, and residential cul-de-sacs within 48 hours, after the storm ends. County crews prioritize snow removal in this order:

  • Major arterial streets: Provide connectivity and access to hospitals, fire stations, police stations and emergency medical services
  • Minor arterial streets: Access to public schools and selected "hot spots" such as steep hills
  • Streets serving public transportation
  • All remaining streets such as residential and local
  • Cul-De-Sacs
