Tips from Salt Lake County Animal Services for Fireworks Season
Salt Lake County, UT — Fireworks may be festive for people, but they can be frightening—and even dangerous—for pets. Salt Lake County Animal Services is sharing important tips to help pet owners keep their furry friends safe and calm during the holiday celebrations.
Before the fireworks begin:
- Walk your dog early in the day. Exercise can help burn off nervous energy before the booms start.
- Leave pets at home. Fireworks shows and hot pavement are no place for pets.
- Secure your home. If you're hosting a BBQ or gathering, double-check that gates, garage doors, and fences are closed to prevent escapes.
- Update your pet's microchip info. The most important thing you can do is make sure your pet is microchipped and that your contact information is current.
During fireworks:
- Create a safe space. Let pets hide if they need to. Don't try to pull them out—this can increase anxiety.
- Use sound therapy. Play soft music or turn on the TV to help mask firework noise.
- Close windows and blinds. The flashes of light and loud bangs are overwhelming. Some animals may even break through screens or windows trying to flee.
- No ID tag? No problem. Use duct tape and a permanent marker to write your name and phone number on your pet's collar.
Important reminder: If you find a lost or injured animal, please don't assume it's unwanted. Fireworks are a major cause of pet escapes, and many animals are just trying to get back home. Contact your local animal services instead of keeping the pet—our officers are trained to help and reunite pets with their families.

Remember, more pets go missing on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year. With additional fireworks permitted in Utah around July 24 as well, it's important to take precautions all month long.
