Salt Lake County Opens Additional Cool Zones with Extended Weekend Hours to Help Residents Beat the Heat

Recreation centers will serve as additional cooling centers and hours will be extended this weekend as temperatures climb.

SALT LAKE COUNTY, UT — Salt Lake County is extending hours and access at multiple recreation centers this weekend giving residents a cool, comfortable place to go as temperatures rise.

On Sunday, July 12, five recreation centers across the county will extend hours until 8:00 pm so families have more time and more options to escape the heat. Centers will be designating specific Cool Zones within the facility during normal operating hours for guests to escape the heat without having to purchase full access to the entire recreation center. Not all recreation center amenities will be available during extended Cool Zone hours on Sunday, July 12.

The five recreation centers extending hours on Sunday, July 12, are:

  • Northwest Recreation Center - 1255 Clark Avenue (300 N), Salt Lake City
    • Sun: 10:30 am – 8:00 pm (Cool Zone only 2:30 – 8:00 pm)
  • Taylorsville Recreation Center - 4948 South 2700 West, Taylorsville
    • Sun: 9:00 am – 8:00 pm (Cool Zone only 3:00 – 8:00 pm)
  • JL Sorenson Recreation Center - 5350 West Herriman Main Street, Herriman
    • Sun: 10:00 am – 8:00 pm (Cool Zone only 3:00 – 8:00 pm)
  • Dimple Dell Recreation Center - 10670 South 1000 East, Sandy
    • Sun: 10:00 am – 8:00 pm (Cool Zone only 3:00 – 8:00 pm)
  • SLC Sports Complex - 645 South Guardsman Way, Salt Lake City
    • Sun: 10:00 am – 8:00 pm (Cool Zone only 5:00 – 8:00 pm)

All Salt Lake County Cool Zones have air-conditioned space and seating for anyone who needs relief from the heat. Water and water bottle filling stations may be available at various locations throughout the weekend. A full list of Salt Lake County Cool Zones, hours, and locations is available at SLCo.to/zones.

Homeless Resource Centers remain open with their normal operating hours, and the Weigand Center (437 W 200 S, Salt Lake City) is open daily from 7:00 am – 7:00 pm. and is a welcoming place for anyone who needs to get out of the heat.

The County is asking residents to check on neighbors, family members, pets and anyone who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat, including older adults, young children, and people who work outdoors. Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, limit time outside during the hottest part of the day and never leave children or pets in a parked car.
