Cool Zones Available in Salt Lake County to Beat the Summer Heat

Salt Lake County, UT–Salt Lake County is helping residents stay safe during extreme heat by offering Cool Zones throughout the summer—air-conditioned public spaces open throughout the Salt Lake Valley. Locations include:

  • Salt Lake County Libraries and Senior Centers
  • Salt Lake City Public Libraries
  • Homeless service providers

Cool Zones are free and open to the public during regular business hours; holiday closures apply. County Senior Centers are available to anyone age 60 or older. 

Bonus way to stay cool: All Salt Lake County youth ages 0–18 have free access to County recreation centers—a great option for keeping your family active and out of the heat.

Please note: Salt Lake County Libraries and Senior Centers will be closed on Thursday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. However, Salt Lake City Public Libraries will remain open, as the city recognized the holiday on Monday.

Salt Lake County advises all people, especially older adults, to exercise caution in excessive heat by following these tips:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water & liquids, avoiding alcohol and caffeine.
  • Wear appropriate clothing – light colored & light weight fabrics work best.
  • Stay indoors during midday when outside temperatures are hottest, usually between noon and 3pm.
  • Take it easy, avoiding exercise and strenuous activity when it’s hottest outside.
  • Know the warning signs of heat-related illness, which include dizziness, nausea, rapid heart rate, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.
  • Seek a Cool Zone – visit a county facility to escape the heat.
