Salt Lake County is now officially recognized as an AARP Age-Friendly Community through AARP's Livable Communities initiative. This designation highlights the County's work to create a place where people of all ages can thrive—through things like mixed-use zoning, safe and diverse transportation, and a range of housing options.

This new designation gives the County access to helpful resources, research, and support to improve policies and make investments that benefit older adults and families.

Age-Friendly Projects & Initiatives

Salt Lake County is committed to being an age-friendly community, fostering a high quality of life for residents of all ages. Through a range of existing initiatives—from wellness programs and social engagement opportunities to efforts that help people age in place and stay connected through accessible, welcoming public spaces—the County is working to ensure that older adults can thrive.

  • The County Library provides a wealth of resources for all county residents to learn, engage, create, and explore. The Library at Your Door program helps people connect with library resources without needing to leave home, which can be especially helpful to older adults and people with disabilities.
  • Environmental Sustainability efforts across Salt Lake County safeguard natural resources, support public health, and ensure a vibrant, resilient community for generations to come.
  • Parks & Recreation offers high-quality opportunities for people of all ages, including older adults, to stay active, healthy, and connected.
  • The Regional Solutions Conference engages community leaders, planners, and experts in dynamic discussions aimed at fostering sustainable, livable, and age-friendly communities.
  • Senior Centers and other programs offered by Aging & Adult Services directly impact older adults and serve as an example of what makes Salt Lake County an age-friendly community.

Looking ahead, Salt Lake County is expanding its efforts with innovative projects aimed at creating even more inclusive, supportive environments that promote healthy aging and lifelong community participation.
